There have been numerous alterations to the church over the years and in 1855 it was substantially rebuilt. There are some outstanding stained glass windows, especially the Burne-Jones chancel window. The tower clock is also of great significance, being the only clock of its type still in existence. The patent movement for the clock was inspired by Big Ben.There are illustrated Guide Books in the church with more information.

We can trace our foundation to the middle of the seventh century, when the monastery established on this site was a power- house in the development of Christianity in England and abroad. The present medieval building is on the site of the stone church built at that time, and beneath the crossing we still have the original seventh-century crypt, where an unbroken tradition of worship continues to this day.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin now stands alone beside the busy A19 road, but it was once at the centre of a thriving and populous village, which may have had as many as 1500 inhabitants, including the Bishop of Durham who had a palace opposite the church. St Mary's is essentially a Norman church on an older site, and a Saxon cross, possibly the original churchyard cross, can be seen built into the west face of the squat Norman tower. After the Norman period the church continued to grow and it contains work from every century up to the 15th. In the 14th century, however, something caused the village of Leake to disappear, leaving only the church as a reminder that it had ever existed. The Parish of Leake still exists and the church now serves the nearby villages of Knayton and Borrowby.

The earliest church at Sowerby, of which any part remains, appears to have been built about the year 1140, or earlier, and is therefore in the Norman style. The South wall of the Nave alone remains, together with the fine South doorway, possibly of 11th century date, which contains Norman ornament showing local regional characteristics. The oak door is medieval with co-eval ironwork, and bears the date 1680 made up of iron studs.

This building housed Thirsk Infants’ School founded in 1833 and paid for by public subscription. It was insisted that the school was undenominational, unlike those run by religious bodies. State education was not introduced until 1870. After the school closed in 1979 local people campaigned to move the public library from the old Assembly rooms in Castlegate to these premises. In 2015 the library moved from here to Meadowfields in Chapel Street. The Thirsk Infants’ School Trust still owns the building and makes grants to local organisations. It is now the home of Family Life Church, which was founded in 2007.
