Monochrome Exhibition

Blog image

A new exhibition in The Orangery, Thirsk Hall Sculpture Garden focuses on the use of a monochromatic colour pallet within sculpture, ceramics and works on paper.

The artist uses shades of black to draw attention to texture and form, while Rodin's bust of Balzac features character-rich marks that play with light.

Serra and de Waal create striking black and white contrasts, with Serra's solid black compositions in both sculpture and paper.

Leach and Buck's ceramics highlight shape and silhouette, forcing the viewer to consider empty space. Lyons' maquettes also use negative space to emphasize severe lines.

Nearby in Gallery One you can see the ongoing Austin Wright exhibition.

His sculpture became widely recognised in the 1950s when he was commissioned by institutions such as Manchester City Council, Wakefield Cathedral and Derby Cathedral to create large-scale pieces.

Both exhibitions and Sculpture Garden are now open Wed to Sat, 11am - 5pm.
