The new North Yorkshire

Blog image

A new single council will be established in North Yorkshire to replace the existing NY County Council and District Councils such as Hambleton.

Following Parliamentary approval, plans for transitional arrangements will now be made, including for elections in May 2022 for the future unitary council.

It is expected that the transition will start in April 2022 be complete a year later.

Cllr Gareth Dadd said “I know that commitment, innovation and resilience is shared by teams throughout the county, district and borough councils and that as they become a single team the county stands to benefit greatly."

County Council Chief Executive, Richard Flinton, said: “[This decision] allows us to deliver on our promise to empower local communities including town and parish councils and local groups and to work with them to develop plans and people focussed networks around our market towns. Local decision making and action will be a key feature of the new council."

Hambleton cases

Blog image

Hambleton comprises Bedale, Easingwold, Northallerton, Stokesley, Thirsk and all the hamlets and villages around these. The graph shows the number of coronavirus cases in the area from the start of this year. The cases are the weekly rate, with 406 cases in Hambleton in the week to Fri 23 Jul.

'Cases' are people testing positive for Covid-19, and many will be poorly. The impact is less severe now because of vaccination and most will be able to cope at home in isolation without hospitalisation.

Unvaccinated people are more vunerable and should phone 119 to book an appointment unless under 18 or have been medically advised against it.

The chart was derived from the data at

Rare volunteer opportunity

Blog image

Do you enjoy meeting people, local and from all over the world?

Thirsk’s information centre is entirely volunteer-run and is looking for a few more volunteers. It is interesting work meeting both visitors and also more local people that you might have expected. You will always be with an experienced volunteer Duty Manager who will show you the ropes.

We want everyone to feel safe so ask all volunteers and visitors to continue to sanitise their hands, wear a face covering and keep a safe distance from others. It’s a small thing to make sure no one feels unable to visit.

Check if you meet these requirements:

– Ahead of preparation of the monthly volunteering rota you can specify any days you are not available, for example on holiday. You can tell us which days you would prefer to work but, importantly, need to be flexible. An average of one 3hr shift a week is usual, either morning or afternoon, although more time may be available if you wish.

– Experience in a customer-facing role is helpful, but not essential. For example this might have been in a shop, as a sales person or talking with customers on the phone. Alternatively you might have been in a job dealing with people as a nurse or teacher for example.

– Knowledge of, and interest in, Thirsk, and North Yorkshire more generally, although most of us learn from others and our leaflets & publications.

– Basic IT skills such as finding information online. In addition to Google, we have our own information store & internal messaging – training will be given.

If you might be interested in volunteering, please phone Jocelyn Caramello for a chat about it on
